Formative Research on Child Marriage
Child Rights and You (CRY) is one of the biggest organizations working on securing child rights in India, with a particular focus on rights of the girl child in some instances. Through this project, CRY aims to conduct a formative research study on child marriage for knowledge creation to aid programming, system strengthening and policy dialogues. The objective of the study is to understand the Systemic Response to Child Marriage – the legal/ policy provisioning and mechanisms to combat the issue; to document in detail the Stakeholders, Community’s and adolescents knowledge, attitudes, practices and behaviour related to child marriage and the initiatives that are taken at the community level to challenge child marriage practices and the hurdles in establishing a system to curtail CM at the community level; to understand the role of government incentivisation and welfare schemes in the context of child marriage; and to map the convergence of community and government systems under the available provisions and practices, and to determine the scope for synergy at both ends.
DevInsights will conduct an in-depth desk- review, develop tools, collect data and present the insights thus inferred. The study utilises a mixed methods design including both quantitative and qualitative techniques (in combination with PRA tools) towards a comprehensive assessment, married with a thorough review of the secondary data and existing literatures, legal and policy documents pertaining to
the assessment. A total of 1800 structured interviews samples will be conducted, whereby the respondents will include head of the household and child brides and grooms. The various duty bearers involved in the implementation of schemes and laws pertaining to child marriage abolition and state level officials across multiple departments will be respondent group for key informant interviews. FGDs and other PRA tools will be used for adolescent girls, boys and other community members to gauge their KAPB towards the concerned subject. This will be followed by a rigorous analysis data analysis plan.
