Baseline and Endline Evaluation Project for Pehlay Akshar Foundation’s English Room Project

Pehlay Akshar, in partnership with the Maharashtra Education Department and the State Council for Educational Research and Training, established a multiyear Library and Literacy Program in schools across the state. Built on Pehlay Akshar’s ideology of creating safe learning environments, the program features learning rooms where students explore reading through a specialized curriculum, activities, workshops, and mentoring. The student-centric program improves functional and communicative English to create future-ready leaders, making learning enjoyable for students and teaching enjoyable for teachers. DI conducted an impact assessment of the English Room project using a mixed-methods approach, involving structured interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The assessment covered 640 students from grades 2, 5, and 8in BMC schools, including both English and vernacular medium schools, during baseline, midline, and end-line evaluations. Additionally, DI included 10 teachers, headmasters, and SMC members in the qualitative sample.
