Agriculture, a linchpin of India's economy, supports more than half of the country's population and significantly influences the livelihoods of millions of rural households. In recent years, the agricultural landscape in India has undergone transformative changes driven by technology adoption, government initiatives, NGOs interventions, and a strong focus on inclusivity, particularly concerning women farmers. Yet, challenges remain, warranting further efforts to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for this vital sector.
The significance of agriculture in India cannot be overstated. It accounts for about 18% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) and employs nearly 60% of the workforce[1]. India's farmers provide food security to a nation of over 1.4 billion people while also contributing to the economy through raw materials for various industries[3]. However, the challenges of climate change, market volatility, and inadequate infrastructure pose ongoing threats, compelling stakeholders to rethink and innovate agricultural practices.
Historically, Indian agriculture was characterized by traditional methods and subsistence farming, limiting productivity and growth potential. Many farmers in areas such as Madhya Pradesh and Odisha still engage in subsistence agriculture, where they primarily grow enough food to meet their daily needs, often at the expense of marketable surplus. This pattern of farming has heightened vulnerability and reduced potential income. Yet, in the face of pressing global food demands and the need for economic sustainability, the sector has embraced modernization and technological advancement. A paradigm shift is underway as farmers increasingly adopt enhanced irrigation practices, innovative crop management techniques, and precision agriculture. Technologies like drones for crop monitoring, Internet of Things devices for soil analysis, and predictive analytics for weather forecasting have significantly increased efficiency. The Green Revolution, which began in the 1960s, is another cornerstone of this transformation. The introduction of high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, along with advancements in irrigation and fertilizers, propelled India's food production and helped the country achieve self-sufficiency. While it marked a significant improvement in productivity, it also led to environmental concerns and a neglect of indigenous crops. Addressing these challenges has become essential as the country seeks to modernize agriculture.
Women farmers play a crucial role in this transformation. Farmers, especially women, often lack the necessary knowledge about modern farming techniques and sustainable practices.
